Nadler and dozens of Democrats have been pressing Pelosi to hold impeachment hearings, but the speaker reportedly believes there should be public and bipartisan support to launch the process, according to Politico. Despite the reported rift within the party over impeachment, both Pelosi and Nadler claim they are on the same page on the issue.

"I really don't want to impeach, but at this point, I don't know how we don't", the OH congressman told the Des Moines Register in a Friday interview.

House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler told reporters that he could ultimately pursue a formal impeachment inquiry against Trump, a move that progressive Democrats and outside groups have increasingly sought since the release of a redacted version of U.S. Special Counsel Robert Mueller's report in April. It is clear that House Speaker Pelosi, along with her leadership team, wants independent voters - who were key to Democrats' regaining the House Majority - to be solidly on board before anything happens.

With Trump's administration stonewalling various Democratic-led investigations, several of the party's lawmakers have publicly called for impeachment.

The Republican National Committee responded quickly, saying Ryan's call for impeachment Tuesday was done to appease his "radical base" while trying to keep attention focused on him in a crowded field of Democratic candidates.

"The advantage of that is it can be done with the House", Khanna said, according to The Hill. "They think that you get impeached, you're gone".

Pelosi has toughened her language about the president in recent weeks. No one can foresee now the political fallout from an impeachment of Trump, and the Constitution, which established the impeachment process as a check on the president's behavior between elections, says nothing about using it only when politically convenient. President Richard Nixon resigned in 1974 before Congress could impeach him.

Will Donald Trump Be Impeached Before Conclusion of His First Term?

That was after the attorney general defied the panel's subpoena and refused to appear for a hearing on Special Counsel Robert Mueller's probe of Russian meddling in the 2016 USA election, contacts between Russians and the Trump campaign, and Trump's efforts to impede the probe.

The official line about the discussion from Pelosi's office suggested the speaker and other committee chairmen "had a productive meeting about the state of play with the Mueller report".

The schedule has politicos gaming out when, if ever, impeachment proceedings would have to begin and when they become less likely. While it stopped short of concluding Trump had committed a crime, the report did not exonerate him.

The leaders of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Justice Department - and Mueller - have defended the special counsel's office, but Mueller himself opened the door to a discussion about the quality of his personnel when he singled them out for praise last week in a subtle rebuke of all that earlier criticism. It is time we start holding people in power accountable.

The Senate now has 53 Republicans, 45 Democrats and two independents who usually vote with the Democrats. The special counsel's report affirmed that he considered some of Trump's answers unsatisfactory and that investigators were frustrated by their inability to follow up with Trump to try to get more detail. "And he tells us every single day".
