The Wednesday arrest of Edgar Zambrano, vice president of the opposition-controlled National Assembly in Venezuela, was the latest move in a protracted, increasingly murky struggle between two camps vying for support of the military, which has seen some defections but whose loyalty to Maduro has preserved his grip on power.

An attempted uprising last week led by Guaido, recognized by the United States and other Western countries as the rightful head of state, failed to dislodge Maduro, as have a series of US sanctions against his government.

Guaido invoked the constitution to assume an interim presidency in January, arguing Maduro's 2018 reelection was illegitimate. So far, Maduro has held back from arresting Guaidó himself, as it would stir an global backlash. But the recent measures suggest the ruling Socialist Party is seeking to isolate him by pursuing key political allies.

"We warn the people of Venezuela and the worldwide community: the regime has kidnapped the first vice-president" of the National Assembly, said Mr Guaido.

The Venezuelan regime has begun a purge of suspected defectors and opposition politicians after last week's failed uprising against President Maduro.

"We were surprised by the SEBIN, and after refusing to let us leave our vehicle, they used a tow truck to forcibly transfer us directly to the [SEBIN headquarters] Helicoide", he said.

On the Twitter account of its now-closed embassy in Caracas, Washington called the detention "illegal and inexcusable".

Edgar Zambrano is deputy to National Assembly speaker Guaido, who organised the revolt by around 30 members of the armed forces, many of whom subsequently fled to the Brazilian embassy.

There is little sign that tension will break between Mr Maduro and Mr Guaido, who is backed by the United States and more than 50 other nations. Still another, Mariela Magallanes, is staying at the home of the Italian ambassador in the Venezuelan capital.

Guaido's chief of staff, Roberto Marrero, was arrested in March and remains in jail. Lopez was detained for anti-government protests in 2014 and had been under house arrest for two years before he was freed.

The United States has slapped sanctions on state oil company PDVSA and several top figures in Maduro's government in a bid to pressure Maduro to step aside so Guaido can take office and call new elections.
