Republican congressman breaks ranks and calls for Donald Trump's impeachment

The White House and the Justice Department are now at loggerheads with congressional Democrats over the latter's desire to do their own vetting of Trump. Even Amash's own personal disgust was just partly connected to the Mueller report; as Taylor wrote last night, it has much more to do with how the presidency offends Amash's libertarian sensibilities.

A Democratic U.S. Senator from DE made a couple of claims Monday on CNN about what Republican lawmakers are saying behind the scenes about obstruction of justice and U.S. Attorney General William Barr. Barr later said there was insufficient evidence to bring obstruction charges against Trump. When the House Judiciary began an impeachment investigation in October 1973 - after Richard Nixon fired the special counsel, after months of White House stonewalling and after hours of evidence aired in public testimony - still a majority of Americans opposed the president's impeachment. "Justin is a loser who sadly plays right into our opponents' hands!".

Sen. Mitt Romney said Sunday that he disagrees with Rep. Justin Amash on the Michigan Republican's recent comments that President Donald Trump's conduct has met the "threshold for impeachment".

Amash tweeted his conclusions this weekend after he finished reading the Mueller report, adding that he believes Attorney General William Barr intentionally misrepresented special counsel Robert Mueller's findings. Elizabeth Warren, have weighed the idea of seeking impeachment proceedings against Trump since the release of the Mueller report, but Amash is the first sitting Republican to do so.

After Trump raised the mallet and whacked the Republican mole, others reared their heads and put ol' 45 back in his place. The special counsel's report concluded there is not enough evidence to establish that Trump or anyone on his campaign colluded with Russian Federation. "I respect him, I think it's a courageous statement", Romney told CNN's Jake Tapper.

"I just don't think that there is the full element that you need to prove an obstruction of justice case", Romney said. He again claimed that the Mueller report found "no collusion" and "no obstruction".

In addition, in a case of swift political retribution, Amash drew an election challenge from within his own party on Monday when Jim Lower, a MI state legislator who described himself as "pro-Trump", said he would challenge Amash in the 2020 Republican primary, the Detroit Free Press reported.

Amash cited these instances as the reason for his call for impeachment.

Amash has often been a lone voice in his party, and so his stance carried less impact than if it had come from a party mainstay.

There is "an increasing number of Democrats, and maybe Republicans, who feel this president's conduct is so incompatible with the office ... that if the only way that we can do our oversight is through an impeachment proceeding, then maybe we have to go down that road", Schiff said on CBS News' "Face the Nation".

Having one or even two or three Republicans sign onto impeachment won't make it bipartisan, and it won't have any impact on a Senate removal vote at all.

Ronna McDaniel, chair of the Republican National Committee, accused him of "parroting the Democrats' talking points on Russia".
