Trump has touted the coming plan as the "deal of the century", but Palestinian officials have rebuked the US effort, which they believe will be heavily biased in favor of Israel.

In a Sunday statement, the White House said the meeting would bring together "government, civil society and business leaders to share ideas, discuss strategies and galvanize support for potential economic investments and initiatives that could be made possible by a [Palestine-Israel] peace agreement".

According to the White House, next month's scheduled meeting in Manama is aimed at attracting investment to the region within the context of the proposed US peace plan.

Bahrain hosts the U.S. Navy's Fifth Fleet and is a close ally of Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, which are widely believed to be seeking closer ties to Israel, viewing it as a potential ally against Iran, a shared enemy.

The second official said the workshop will focus only on the economic plan "to show that you can't have peace without economic stability and opportunity, but you also can't have economic opportunity and stability without peace and free of terror and resolving some of these core issues".

Erekat complained that the Trump administration did consult the Palestinian leadership about the "reported workshop-neither over the content, nor the outcome, nor timing".

Kushner is calling the event a "workshop" rather than a summit, the first official said, because he is relying on feedback to the proposal from the many speakers and other participants invited, including from the Palestinian territories.

But the senior USA official said several Palestinian business leaders "have shown a lot of interest" in the conference.
