Both the Conservative and Labour high commands left no doubt that they saw the results as a demand for resolution of the Brexit impasse three years after the 2016 vote for European Union withdrawal.

All 54 seats are up for election.

The Conservatives had previously held about 60 percent of the more than 8,000 seats being contested across England and Northern Ireland.

The councillors are Liberal Democrat party leader David Tutt and newcomers Helen Burton and Rebecca Whippy.

The problems for the two main parties could worsen at the European elections when they will also face the Brexit Party, who are riding high in the opinion polls, and the anti-Brexit group Change UK, largely formed of centrist Labour defectors.
