Recently C. auris reached New York, New Jersey and IL, leading the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to add it to a list of germs deemed "urgent threats".
According to the CDC, most of the cases have been detected in the New York City area, New Jersey, and the Chicago area.
This fungus C Auris has also reached other parts of the world like New York, New Jersey and IL, and other regions of Asia. Some 41% of the Spanish hospital patients affected died within 30 days of being diagnosed. The fungus in some cases can be fatal, the CDC also reported.
Fungal infections are caused by two groups of fungi: albicans and non-albicans.
The fungus has also been detected in respiratory and urine samples, but the CDC says it's unclear if it causes lung or bladder infections.

Most recently, doctors at AIIMS Trauma Centre who studied the profile of all patients admitted in the hospital between 2012 and 2017 and contracted fungal infection found Candida auris was responsible for the infection in almost two of every 10 cases (17.5%). Patients who have undergone recent surgery, used central venous catheters, or been hospitalized for lengthy periods, as well as those with diabetes, are particularly at risk.
If the fungus is so unsafe, why haven't more people heard about it?

According to the Times, people with compromised or weakened immune systems - including elderly people, people who are already sick, and newborns - are the most vulnerable.
Some experts think heavy use of pesticides and other antifungal treatments caused candida auris to pop up in a variety of locations around the same time. The rapid test was able to positively identify C. auris 100% of the time. Unfortunately, Candida auris falls in the latter category.
As C. auris is hard to remove from surfaces, it has caused outbreaks in healthcare facilities.

But it's not just deadly drug-resistant bacterial infections that are spreading.
A drug-resistant superbug fungus has sickened more than 300 patients in New York State.
"Early detection of patients infected with C. auris, as well as good infection prevention and control practices, such as meticulous hand hygiene and environmental disinfection, can prevent its spread", the spokesman said.
