Severe weather wreaks havoc on holiday travel

The York County Office of Emergency Management tweeted the weather service warning Thursday afternoon, and warned residents to download weather apps to keep track of the storms.

A tornado watch reached from coastal Louisiana into central MS, and more weather alerts are likely.

"We'll have several wind reports that could produce wind damage", FOX8 MAX Weather Chief Meteorologist Van Denton said.

"Widespread rain with embedded heavier showers along with potential thunderstorms is forecast", forecasters said in a hazardous weather outlook.

Meanwhile, hundreds of people cleaned up part of a central MS town hit hard by a tornado on Thursday. More than 20 homes were heavily damaged or destroyed.

Damage from the storm system was reported in at least 24 of Mississippi's 82 counties.

Severe storms are expected with damaging winds 70 miles per hour or greater and possibility of a strong tornado (EF2 or higher). On Friday , showers will be likely all day, with a breeze attached. "There is more uncertainty going into Sunday and Monday ".

The National Weather Service issued a series of tornado warnings about a front pushing eastward from Texas on Thursday.

"Mostly cloudy skies remained over the area late this morning, with some breaks in the clouds especially over RI, eastern MA and into the Worcester Hills", forecasters at the weather service in Norton said. The storm system that drenched central Arkansas also killed two Mississippi drivers and a woman in Alabama and left more than 100,000 people without power across Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana and Texas.

National Weather Service forecasters said they believe multiple tornadoes hit the southern half of MS on Thursday as a storm system moves east. The highest threat exists from the Carolinas into New England, it said.

Ahead of the severe weather set to make its way across the Northeast, Delta and United airlines are waiving their flight change fees for travelers scheduled to fly Friday.
