Meanwhile, commercial satellite photos from last week showed increased activity at North Korea's main nuclear site, according to a USA research organization.

"We can not be aware of Pompeo's ulterior motive behind his self-indulgence in reckless remarks; whether he is indeed unable to understand words properly or just pretending on goal", Kwon Jong Gun, a high-ranking North Korean official said, according to state news agency KCNA.

Though Kim claims he still has a good personal relationship with the USA president, he and senior North Korean officials have shown increasing frustration with Trump's top advisers, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and national security adviser John Bolton.

The North Korean statement said Pompeo was "misrepresenting the meaning of our requirement" for the negotiations to be finalized by the year's end, and referred to his "talented skill of fabricating stories". "I'd love to see that done sooner", he added.

North Korea's foreign ministry accused Pompeo of playing down the significance of Kim's comments.

"I wish our dialogue counterpart would be not Pompeo but [an] other person who is more careful and mature in communicating with us".

After criticising Pompeo, Kwon further added, that if Pompeo were to be involved in further talks, "the table will be lousy once again and the talks will become entangled".

On Wednesday, North Korea claimed a "new tactical guided weapons firing test", which was directed by Kim.

Trump and Moon met at the White House a week ago to discuss plans for reviving the diplomatic process between the USA and North Korea.

The report, published Thursday morning local time (Wednesday evening ET) by KCNA, did not state exactly what kind of weapon was tested, nor its potential range. "If it's a new form of cruise missile, it's irrelevant to sanctions, because the current United Nations sanctions are about ballistic missiles".

Kim Dong-yub, an analyst from Seoul's Institute for Far Eastern Studies, said North Korea's descriptions of the test show the weapon is possibly a newly developed cruise missile.

Kwon, whom KCNA said was responding to a question from one of its journalists, said leader Kim had made clear that the U.S. attitude has to change.

FILE - U.S. President Donald Trump and North Korea's leader Kim Jong Un meet during the second U.S. Of the test, the source said, "I think he's taking care of his domestic audience".

The latest announcement came after reports of new activity at a site where the North was believed to build long-range missiles.

"Pyongyang can not conduct a nuclear or long-range missile launch at this point unless it wants to totally shatter what remains of the US-North talks", he continued.

US Defence Secretary Patrick Shanahan played down fears of North Korea's renewed missile testing, telling reporters the weapon was "not a ballistic missile" at the Pentagon.

"It's also an internal message to the North Korean people and to the military" to instil trust in their own security by reinforcing conventional weapons, he said.

The release came amidst an apparent stalemate of diplomatic discussions and an apparent retesting of missile technology by the North Koreans.

The North said Thursday that Kim Jong Un mounted an observation post to learn about and guide the test-fire of the weapon.

Mr Pompeo said yesterday that he is "still in charge of the team" negotiating with North Korea over its nuclear programme.

Pompeo, who travelled four times to North Korea a year ago, has voiced hope for a deal with North Korea but also stood firm in calling for the country to commit to full denuclearisation before the U.S. eases sanctions.

The embassy said in a statement that the talks had been "constructive".

But U.S. Department of Defense officials cited by CNN said no missile launch had been detected by either the U.S. Northern Command or Strategic Command, both of which monitor strategic threats across the globe.

The assessment is based on a review of information gathered from satellites and aircraft that did not register any indication of a launch of any type of short-range tactical weapon or a ballistic missile, the official said.

When Wonhaeng expressed disappointment with the Hanoi summit, Kim said he would do his best to make possible a temple stay program in North Korea.

For North Korea, that would mean lifting the sanctions it has imposed against the North over its development of nuclear weapons and missiles capable of reaching the US mainland.
