Nielsen's Resignation Lifts Curtain On Miller's Campaign To Stack Admin With Hardliners

Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen is stepping down.

On Saturday Ms Nielsen tweeted that she "could not be more proud" of border patrol agents, praising their "compassionate, humanitarian response" to border security.

Nielsen's tenure at the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has been marred by controversy and deep tension conflict between the Democrats and Republicans. Also pushed out Monday was U.S. Secret Service Director Randolph "Tex" Alles. CNN is reporting Trump ousted Nielsen following months of reported tensions between the two.

In a crisis like the one we're facing at the border, Trump should keep firing people until he finds the ones who will do the job.

When asked what he thought about Nielsen in the role of Homeland Security Secretary, Garza said, "She tried her best".

On Sunday, he said McAleenan's appointment as acting secretary was "deeply disturbing".

Nielsen's relationship with the president had always been said to be hard. They chided reporters for focusing on the "palace intrigue" surrounding Nielsen's departure - but they struggled to describe, even in broad terms, just what Trump wants from his next DHS chief.

Arrests along the southern border have increased sharply over the past few months.

On Friday, he called for Congress to "get rid of the whole asylum system" and get rid of immigration judges, and criticized a long-standing federal court decree mandating certain standards of care for migrant children. He is said to be liked by congressional leaders, the administration and Homeland Security officials. Rather, Nielsen's resignation "demonstrates the power of immigration hardliners inside the White House, including national security adviser John Bolton and senior adviser Stephen Miller, who, despite her defense of the administration's controversial policies, still deemed Nielsen insufficiently tough when it came to stemming the flow of migrants to the border". She also moved to abandon longstanding regulations that dictate how long children are allowed to be held in immigration detention and requested bed space from the USA military for 12,000 people in an effort to detain all families who cross the border. But there's no effort afoot to craft the kind of bipartisan immigration overhaul bill that would be able to pass both chambers. "The big takeaways from a legal perspective is that these are exceedingly hard issues and many of them are being resolved by the federal courts, which mean there will be no quick answers". Customs and Border Protection chief Kevin McAleenan will then become acting secretary of DHS.

But McAleenan has spoken publicly about the need for USA aid dollars to countries such as Hondorus, El Salvador and Guatemala - from where many recent undocumented migrants originate.

"So much of what the president put out there isn't really legally feasible", said Sarah Pierce, an immigration policy analyst at the Migration Policy Institute, a non-partisan think tank in Washington.
