The powerful winter storm will bring heavy snow and blizzard conditions to north central and northeast Colorado through Thursday, with some forecasters calling for the potential of another bomb cyclone, similar to what much of Colorado experienced in mid-March.
National Weather Service hydrologists calculate river levels by measuring the soil's moisture, how much snow is on the ground, the current and forecasted temperatures and what precipitation is expected to come.
An unusual but not rare weather phenomenon known as "thunder snow" - snow accompanied by thunder and lightning - was reported in central South Dakota. The storm's path of 12-plus inches reaches as far north to Duluth and Silver Bay to the east into Wisconsin past Ashland and Hayward. And thundersnow struck parts of South Dakota, including the capital city of Pierre, according to the report. Additional winter storm watches will likely be issued for other areas in the path of this storm.
A major storm is on the way for nation's midsection Wednesday and Thursday.

Heavier snow is expected along the Down East coast, where up to 8 to 9 inches is forecast to accumulate from Machias to Eastport and Calais.

Up in Aroostook County, where it has been a long, snowy winter, the snowfall will taper closer toward the Canadian border, with the accumulation expected to top out around 5 to 6 inches from Fort Kent to Van Buren.
