'Boyz n the Hood' director John Singleton remains in coma

In 1993 he directed Poetic Justice and followed it up with Higher Learning, Baby Boy and Shaft starring Samuel L. Jackson. "As much as we will treasure his body of work, we were looking forward to the films John would have made in the years ahead".

After announcing earlier today that John Singleton was being taken off life support, just a few hours later it was sadly reported that the famed director passed away.

They also opened up on his struggle with hypertension, saying, "Like many African Americans, Singleton quietly struggled with hypertension".

"I think I was living this film before I ever thought about making it", Singleton told Vice in 2016.

Seven people were praying in the mosque at the time the early morning fire broke out, but they were quickly able to extinguish it. Gavin Newsom offered their condolences to the Jewish community after a man opened fire Saturday at a synagogue outside San Diego.

Singleton's peers and colleagues have expressed their affection.

Singleton was 24 when he earned a pair of Oscar nods (original screenplay and direction) for 1991's Boyz N the Hood. Highlighting the crack epidemic plaguing Los Angeles, the show have proven to be a hit for the network, and was renewed for a third season last fall.

In 2002, "Boyz N the Hood" was added to the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress, which called it "an innovative look at life and the tough choices present for kids growing up in South Central Los Angeles". They state that Singleton is "currently hospitalized in a coma and is unable to provide for his personal needs" or "manage his financial resources".

In a 2014 appearance at Loyola Marymount University, Singleton criticized major studios for refusing to allow black directors to make films with black themes.

As news that Singleton would be taken off life support circulated, many paid tribute to the director. "Thank you for capturing USA like no other", tweeted the Grammy-nominated singer and actress Janelle Monae. John Singleton, thank you for your vision.

In a declaration filed at the Los Angeles Superior Court, she said doctors "do not have a concrete diagnosis, my dad is progressing every day ..."

"John Singleton was a great director and storyteller who was never afraid to show African Americans in complex, multidimensional roles". One of them was Jordan Peele, who on Monday tweeted: "John was a fearless artist and a true inspiration". For nearly three decades, John was one of the most important filmmakers in this business, dating back to his masterwork, Boyz n the Hood.

Singleton has more recently focused on TV projects, directing episodes of Empire and American Crime Story, as well as acting as creator and executive producer on 2017's Snowfall.
