Police are now investigating the matter and have yet to arrest anyone in connection.

Gambino family mobster Francesco "Frank" Cali has been murdered in what local media say is the first major NY gang killing in more than 30 years.

Authorities are investigating Cali's death, and some media reports note a blue pickup was seen leaving the scene shortly after the shooting. Another witness told the Daily News: "The man was on the ground face-up".

The New York Police Department says that at 9:17 p.m. ET, officers received a 911 call reporting an assault in progress in front of Cali's house at 25 Hilltop Terrace. His head was by his SUV, and the truck was open'.

According to the Associated Press, court documents referred to Cali as the underboss of the Gambino crime family.

It's unclear whether Cali's murder was carried out by a rogue actor or approved by other members of the Italian American mafia in New York City.

The New York Daily News reported in 2008 that Cali was among 62 people arrested on federal racketeering charges and he later pleaded guilty to conspiring to extort money. Cali was reportedly the leader of the Gambino crime family. He did just 16 months in the prison for the conviction.

Cali, who was born and raised in NY, was the nephew-in-law of John Gambino and the great-nephew of Bonanno mobsters Vito Bonventre and Giovanni Bonventre.
