U.S. measles outbreak could be prevented

A measles outbreak in the Portland, Ore., area has revived a bitter debate over "philosophical" exemptions to childhood vaccinations as public health officials across the Northwest scramble to limit the fallout. Two doses are about 97% effective.

As a measles outbreak rages in Clark County, health care professionals advise a simple solution: Get vaccinated.

"Upon finding and verifying that there is a measles case in Arizona, we activate our emergency operations center", she said.

Recent data compiled by Idaho health officials show about 3,800 school-age children in the state likely are not fully immunized for the measles.

The measles virus is very infectious. Approximately 30 percent of reported cases have one or more complications including pneumonia, ear infections or diarrhea. More than 95 percent of individuals who get the vaccine after 12 months of age will develop an immunity to all three viruses.

Measles is a potentially very serious, though extremely preventable viral infection which is usually spread from person to person.

This was amidst the clarification from the Department of Health (DoH) that no deaths had been linked to Dengvaxia and calls from doctors' group Doctors for Truth and Welfare to "halt the continuous spread of unproven claims of deaths caused by the dengue vaccine by the same unqualified but noisy people who are largely responsible for the fall in vaccine confidence in the country". If a child does not complete the full series of immunizations in the first two years, he/she may be vulnerable to a disease that should have been prevented. The department told the Associated Press that of those who were affected by the virus, none of them had been vaccinated. Complications are more common in young children and adults.

A child who received only one dose of the measles vaccine is the newest person diagnosed with the disease, according to a Friday update from Clark County Public Health. It occurred despite an earlier law that required parents to talk to a doctor to opt out of vaccines.
