Although closer to the Earth, the February 19 supermoon will not be as colorful as last month's 'super blood Moon" eclipse that saw the Earth "s natural satellite turn a stunning shade of red. It's a combination of two things - a snow moon and a supermoon.

The supermoon is described as a full moon or a new moon that almost coincides with perigee-the closest that the Moon comes to the Earth in its elliptic orbit-resulting in a slightly larger-than-usual apparent size of the lunar disk as viewed from Earth.

Tuesday, February 19, a super snow moon will light up the sky.

February's full moon reached its peak at 10:54 a.m.

The moon will appear particularly large when it is close to the horizon thanks to an optical illusion known as "the moon illusion".

Each month's full moon goes by a nickname; some full moons have several alternate names.

Why is it called the snow moon?

The moon will be full today and at its perigee.

The Old Farmer's Almanac notes that the Wishram people of the Pacific Northwest referred to the Snow Moon as "Shoulder to Shoulder Around the Fire Moon", and that the Cherokee people of the Southeast referred to it as the "Bone Moon".

According to Mentalfloss, this time the moon will be as close as it ever gets to earth, making it appear 14 per cent larger and 30 per cent brighter than at any other time.

The next full moon will be on March 20, and while it is also going to be a "supermoon" it won't be quite as big as this one.

Back in November 2016 we experienced the closest the moon has come to Earth since January 26, 1948. The farthest point of the ellipse is called the apogee. When this happens, the moon appears larger and brighter in the sky.
