Democratic congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard, an Iraq war veteran who met dictator Bashar al-Assad in Syria during that country's devastating civil war, has said that she is launching a USA presidential bid.

Ever since her 2017 visit to Syria, Gabbard has been condemned for daring to seek firsthand accounts rather than blindly trusting the MSM narrative, so on Friday the pundits were again off to the races, with fresh accusations of Assad-sympathizing.

"'I have made a decision to run and will be making a formal announcement within the next week", she said on the show, which airs Saturday.

Senator Elizabeth Warren of MA, who announced her plans to challenge Donald Trump for the presidency last month, is moving quickly with trips across early primary states.

Leading up to the 2016 Democratic primaries, Gabbard served under Democratic National Committee chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz as vice-chairwoman but resigned to fully support Bernie Sanders' campaign.

A staunch anti-war voice in Congress, Gabbard has called for the U.S.to halt further involvement in Saudi Arabia's military intervention in Yemen, describing the civil war as a humanitarian crisis.

Hawaii Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard is running for President in 2020. "Will you join me?" she asked on Twitter. She stepped down in 2004 to fight in the Iraq War. Gabbard has a habit of bucking people in her own party.

"Assad apologist" seems to be the Tulsi equivalent of "Putin puppet", judging from the early tweets, though she was accused of being one of those too.

Despite - or because of - her military background, she has opposed United States involvement in Syria and faced criticism for visiting that country and meeting President Bashar al-Assad.

The Democratic Party Of Hawai'i Chair Keali'i Lopez has already issued a statement supporting Rep. Gabbard's presidential announcement. Gabbard has questioned whether the Syrian leader was actually responsible for a chemical attack on civilians that killed dozens and led to a retaliatory USA attack on a Syrian airbase. "I'm seriously thinking of how I can best be of service to our country", she told Concord Monitor News reporter Paul Steinhauser before meeting with Rockingham County Democrats.

Asked a year ago whether she would still consider running if Senator Sanders ran, Ms Gabbard said Senator Sanders is a friend and she did not know what his plans were.
