At the end of last flu season, 333 people died flu-related deaths.

"The season is really starting to pick up", said Lynnette Brammer, the lead of CDC's domestic influenza surveillance team.

According to the CDC, in past flu seasons when the match between flu vaccine and circulating strains of flu virus is close, a flu shot is between 60 to 70 percent effective.

In 1918, H1N1 flu killed 50 million people around the world. Several different strains of the flu were responsible for the deaths, including influenza A, influenza B, H1N1, H3N2, or a mix, according to the CDC.

In Arkansas last week, 52 of the state's 75 counties reported influenza cases.

When that strain predominated, almost 1 million Americans were hospitalized and 80,000 died.

Virginia along with 18 other states now have high levels of flu activity.

It's too early to tell how severe this season will be or what the mix of viruses will be, Brammer said. "For some families, we take blood a few times a year to see immunologically how the vaccine is working", said Martin.

Four adult deaths and one pediatric death have now been linked to the flu in Kentucky this flu season.

"The No. 1 thing people need to know is that the flu season will go until May", added Thompson. "I expect activity to continue for several more weeks". He calls it a typical progression and stresses it's certainly not too late to get a flu shot, which is the best preventive measure. Get vaccinated. Because even though it isn't an ideal vaccine, it does protect us.
