Wilder retains heavyweight crown after Fury thriller ends in draw

Deontay Wilder vs. Tyson Fury ended up being an entertaining WBC Title fight to remember.

In the end Fury's courageous effort was not enough to wrench the WBC belt off of the American with the judges scoring the contest a split-decision draw.

"When you get two warriors, you get a great fight", Wilder said.

Tyson Fury sounds more upset with the draw scorecard than the one which gave Deontay Wilder the win.

Fury, who won the unified world title from Wladimir Klitschko in 2015 only to lose his belts as he battled depression, alcohol and drug problems, was equally baffled.

"I've come away and I'm on away soil but what most disappointed me was the British judge".

Tyson Fury appeared to be out cold on the canvas after eating a right hand and a crushing left hook from WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder in the 12th round.

Because of a rematch clause, both fighters were asked if they would like to do it again.

Speaking on BBC Radio 5 live's boxing podcast, Costello said: "It has created all this controversy and debate, but it came at the end not of a stinker, as many of us feared, but it's a draw that we are all talking about - it's contentious for me, rather than controversial". I don't know anyone on the planet that can move like that. Fury (27-0-1, 19 KOs) climbed back to his feet and eventually cleared his head, but it seemed as though all momentum had shifted in Wilder's favor.

"If someone showed you a video who didn't know the two fighters in the ring and said "this fella on the canvas actually comes back and almost stops the opponent at the end of the round", no-one would believe you", said Costello.

Speaking as a pundit for BT Sport Box Office, Lewis said: "They need to get some good judges, these judges were bad. I was on the brink of suicide, and I came back", he said.

But Joshua, the IBF, WBA, WBO and IBO heavyweight champion, certainly will have had some interesting thoughts as he watched on.

The fighters will meet in the center of the ring in the biggest heavyweight title fight on US soil since 2002 when plenty at stake for both, including a possible date with unified champion Anthony Joshua in 2019.

There were plenty more backing Fury on social media.

The 6-foot-9 Fury landed two solid rights inside 30 seconds remaining in the eighth round, as Wilder, who is 6-7, pawed with his jab and could not find the target for the right hand that had been cocked at his side. But early in the ninth, Fury went down when he absorbed a shot to the top of the head from Wilder. I was forcing my punches too much.
