The New York Police Department has already started to investigate these threats and will investigate each call they receive. The recipient is then instructed to make a large Bitcoin payment - sometimes to the tune of $20,000 - in order to prevent the detonation of the explosive device.

Some places affected in the USA received emails with the subject line "Think Twice" and a demand of $20,000 in Bitcoin in order to call off the threat.

"Officers are now investigating these threats and will provide an update when additional information becomes available".

"We are now monitoring multiple bomb threats that have been sent electronically to various locations throughout the city", its counter-terrorism unit tweeted.
