US President Donald Trump has cancelled a meeting with his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, in protest at Russia's seizure of Ukrainian naval boats.

"Of course, a new meeting is possible", said Ushakov.

Ukraine has also imposed restrictions on entry for foreigners into Crimea, and the European Court of Human Rights said that Kyiv has filed a complaint against Russian Federation over the maritime confrontation.

The US president added, however, that he looked forward to a meaningful summit as soon as the Kerch strait situation is resolved. Hopes of progress over tariffs in Mr Trump's expected talks with Chinese leader Xi Jinping have been dampened.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo told CNN on December 1 that Trump canceled the meeting because of Russia's behavior "that is deeply inconsistent with worldwide law".

Russian Federation and Ukraine have blamed each other for the November 25 clash in the Kerch Strait, which links the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov.

Still, what Putin really wants is to make a deal with Trump.

In addition, the Russian leader expressed regret that he could not have a full-length meeting with Trump.

"If the domestic situation and the pressure from Russophobes like Ukraine and its sponsors prevent the U.S. president from developing normal ties with the Russian president. we will wait for another chance", Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said, adding "love can't be forced".

The spokesman said Putin had explained the situation in the Kerch Strait and the Sea of Azov to French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Angela Merkel in their meetings in Buenos Aires, but Trump missed the opportunity.

He and Mr Trump will meet later for talks over dinner, it has been announced. News reports said they did not greet one another when leaders gathered at the start, and they stood far apart when leaders and their spouses posed for a photograph later in the day.

And he cosied up at Friday's round-table talks to Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, somewhat of a fellow outcast at the G-20 over his suspected role in the killing of a dissident Saudi journalist.

He said that when the incident happened, he instructed his office to set up a call with the Kremlin leader to say "we are ready for this negotiation to de-escalate. and unfortunately, until now, Putin did not answer my request for a direct phone conversation".
