Two Israeli soldiers have been shot dead by a Palestinian in the occupied West Bank, the Israeli military says, amid an upsurge of attacks in the area. An army spokesperson was unable to confirm reports that the assailant had targeted Israeli soldiers.
Palestinian attacks against Israelis occur sporadically in the West Bank.
On Wednesday, Israeli forces killed Salah Barghouti, a Palestinian suspect wanted in the drive-by shooting earlier this week at a West Bank bus stop. In addition to the couple, a man in his twenties suffered moderate wounds and four others were lightly wounded, including two 16-year-old girls.
"The worldwide community bears part of the responsibility for the aggression by the occupation and the settlers because of its silence toward these attacks", said Palestinian government spokesperson Youssef Al-Mahmoud.
A woman who was seven months pregnant was among those wounded in that attack.
The mother remains in hospital in a serious condition.

The group, which carried out the shooting at Ofra on Sunday, vowed to continue attacks on Israeli targets and warned that, "the enemy must not dream of security, quiet or stability in the valiant West Bank".
Ashraf Naalwa, 23, was killed when forces tried to arrest him near Nablus in the West Bank, Israel's Shin Bet security service said. "The security forces are pursuing them and I hope that there will be news soon on this matter", said Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at an event in Jerusalem on Wednesday evening.
"Our guiding principle is that whoever attacks us and whoever tries to attack us - will pay with his life", he said.
They said he was behind a drive-by shooting in the West Bank on Sunday that left seven Israelis wounded.
On Wednesday, Israeli troops killed a man near Ramallah. He was shot and killed after firing on Israeli troops while trying to evade arrest.
The Israeli raids come just as a deal had been secured to restore relative calm to another part of the Palestinian territories, the Gaza Strip.

Around 600,000 Israelis now live in settlements considered illegal by the global community.
"My heart, our hearts, are with Shira and Avihai at the death of a four-day-old baby who does not even have a name", Netanyahu told foreign media and diplomats in a speech.
"This is an attack Hamas praised as 'heroic, '" he wrote.
