Trump hopes to meet North Korea leader next year

United States Secretary of State Michael Pompeo on Tuesday abruptly postponed a meeting with a top North Korean official in NY scheduled for Thursday, in a setback to peace talks between the two countries, AFP reported.

The talks between President Donald Trump's top diplomat and the North Korean delegation, which had been due to take place in NY on Thursday, "will now take place at a later date", State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert.

"We will reconvene when our respective schedules permit", she said.

The State Department had said Monday that the two sides "will discuss making progress on all four pillars" of the Singapore summit, referring to a four-point joint statement signed by Kim Jong-un and Trump on June 12, and achieving the "final, fully verified denuclearization" of North Korea.

A think tank affiliated with the foreign ministry in Pyongyang warned Friday that the regime could resume nuclear work if the US side didn't relax its economic blockade.

At a White House press conference, the president said Pompeo's meeting with Kim Yong Chol will be rescheduled.

Pompeo himself revealed in a Sunday interview that he expected some "real progress" in talks with Kim, including "an effort to make sure that the summit between the two leaders can take place".

State Department officials gave no further reasons for the delay to the meeting, although North Korea has stepped up its demands that the United States lift sanctions.

But previous rounds of talks, and a planned visit by Pompeo to Pyongyang in August, have been canceled as negotiations hit an impasse over the past several months.

"I think we have to look at it as a part of the process of reaching complete denuclearization and setting up a peace regime", the unnamed official told reporters.

Russian Federation and China have argued that North Korea should be rewarded with an easing of sanctions for halting missile tests and opening up a dialogue with the United States on denuclearization of the Korean peninsula. Pompeo said on October 8 that those inspectors would visit North Korea "as soon as we get it logistically worked out".

In Seoul, South Korean presidential spokesman Kim Eui-kyeom said that his government doesn't believe U.S.

Recently, officials from both the countries made trips to North Korea and Russian Federation, leading to speculations that Kim is planning to embark on a visit to Russian Federation in November or December and meet Putin.
