Jeff Sessions Resigns as Trump's Attorney General. Here's How Washington Reacted

Legal experts suggested on Wednesday that though Trump may have fired Sessions to exercise more control over the Russian Federation investigation, the attorney general's ouster may have added yet another piece to a growing obstruction-of-justice case against Trump.

Asked if he sees this move as an attempt to undermine the investigation, Dean said yes. "It is an entire branch of the government and even for those five justices, if they do lean toward the President, to do precedent breaking action makes us look like a banana republic - you could start losing one or more of those five", he said.

Trump has long expressed frustration with Sessions over his recusal from the Justice Department's Russian Federation investigation. Trump tweeted this June that "the Russian Witch Hunt Hoax continues, all because Jeff Sessions didn't tell me he was going to recuse himself". The former attorney general submitted a letter of resignation at the president's "request". Mr. Sessions' undated resignation letter was then sent to the White House.

Last November, Whitaker penned a CNN op-ed claiming that the Robert Mueller investigation was going too far by digging into the president's financial records.

Whitaker, who is at least temporarily replacing Sessions, said in a 2017 CNN interview that "I could see a scenario where Jeff Sessions is replaced, it would recess appointment and that attorney general doesn't fire Bob Mueller but he just reduces his budget to so low that his investigations grinds to nearly a halt".

The departure of Mr Sessions, who was the first U.S. senator to back Mr Trump's presidential run in 2016, was long expected, and came one day after Republicans lost control of the House of Representatives but boosted their Senate majority.

Mr Sessions' chief of staff Matthew Whitaker - who has been appointed the acting Attorney-General - will now oversee the probe, taking over from deputy Attorney-General Rod Rosenstein, who held the responsibility since the recusal.

Trump ducked, saying he'd like to answer that at a later time.

"Theoretically, I think the foreman of the grand jury could take them in to the judge, or they would be filed with the judge already, and this would be the basis to unseal them", he said.

Trump has made no secret of his feeling about Sessions, calling him a "traitor", a "dumb southerner", "Mr. Magoo" - and, Colbert reminded, Trump called him "perhaps the most humiliating of all: "member of my administration".

Trump and Sessions had a falling out after the attorney general recused himself from Mueller's investigation.

Jeff Sessions has been forced out as attorney general.

"Attorney General Sessions has selflessly dedicated more than 40 years to serving the people of Alabama and the nation", he said.

Nadler says he wants to know why Trump is making the change and "who has authority over Special Counsel Mueller's investigation?"

"Sessions did not do the thing he could have done to better protect Rosenstein, and through Rosenstein, the Mueller investigation", Vladeck said.
