Student Shot at Butler HS, Shooter in Custody

Police believe this was an isolated incident. CMS Supt. Clayton Wilcox said in a press conference outside the school that the shooting occurred after a disagreement between two students.

A student opened fire at Butler High School on Monday, striking a classmate, police said. The suspect was taken into custody and questioned by police.

Tyrrell didn't release the victim's age or identity but referred to the student as a male.

According to the report, one person was taken to the hospital with injuries.

But Tracy O. Russ, the chief communications officer for Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, told TIME that the decision to keep the school open was made to provide students with a safe place to stay until their families could come get them.

The student accused of firing the fatal shot was arrested quickly as investigators secured the campus, which is about 12 miles southeast of Charlotte.

Dozens of parents gathered outside of the school of about 2,000 students to wait. Multiple parents told local television channels that they felt confused and unsure about where to meet with their children. The lockdown at the school was lifted around 9:15 a.m.
