In a statement, White House spokesman Raj Shah said: "With Leader McConnell's cloture filing, Senators have been given ample time to review this seventh background investigation".

Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley, who tweeted early Thursday that he had received the report, is expected to read it first, followed by his colleagues either individually or possibly in groups.

"We are profoundly disappointed that after the tremendous sacrifice she made in coming forward, those directing the FBI investigation were not interested in seeking the truth", Ford's counsel said.

Republicans on the Senate Judiciary Committee tweeted that Kavanaugh's six earlier background checks found no such issues. "It's kind of appalling".

Sanders told reporters Wednesday at a rare White House briefing that "the president was stating the facts" at a MS rally Tuesday night. But while only 68 percent of Republicans responded that way in July, 80 percent did this week - an indicator that Kavanaugh's confirmation fight has energized the Republican base.

Kavanaugh underwent those prior FBI screenings, starting in 1993, because of his work in various high-level federal government positions, including his stint with the White House Counsel and his current post as an appellate judge.

Trump nominated Kavanaugh to replace Anthony Kennedy, who had been a swing vote on a court now divided between four conservative and four liberal justices.

During the hearing, Dr Christine Blasey Ford testified that Kavanaugh sexually assaulted her decades ago when the two were in high school.

Experts have said it is not unusual for victims of trauma to remember certain details vividly but have little recollection of other things. "How did you get there?" I don't remember. Where is the place?

The poll was based on telephone interviews with a random sample of 1,462 adults, conducted from September 24 to September 30 -after Kavanaugh and Ford testified before the Senate about the sexual assault allegations - and featured a 3 percent margin of error at 95 percent confidence level.

McConnell had said Wednesday morning that senators supporting Kavanaugh would not be deterred from voting this week by protesters in the Senate hallways. 'I don't know.' Upstairs, downstairs, where was it?

Besides Trump, Senate Republicans also began to aim credibility questions at Ford. In that light, they say it can't be called an investigation.
