President Donald Trump recommended that Spain build a border wall across the Sahara desert to stem the Mediterranean migrant crisis, Spain's foreign minister said this week.

Spanish officials expressed skepticism and reminded Trump of the vastness of the Sahara, El Pais reported Borrell as saying, but Trump is said to have brushed off their concerns and quipped, "The Sahara border can't be bigger than ours with Mexico".

Josep Borrell told a lunchtime gathering this week, according to a video released by Spanish media: "Closing ports is not a solution, and neither is building a wall along the Sahara like President Trump suggested to me recently".

"They built this gorgeous wall where the plane went down in Pennsylvania, Shanksville", Trump told the reporters. Borrell had accompanied Spain's King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia to the White House in June.

Josep Borrell said the USA president dismissed any doubts expressed by Spanish diplomats, who pointed out that the desert stretched for 3,000 miles.

Last year, Barcelona's rival, Real Madrid, captured its third straight Champions League title and fourth in five seasons. Last season, Messi added to Barcelona's 6-1 demolition of Girona by slotting a free kick under the defensive wall.

As Spain is located in Europe and the Sahara is located in Africa, building such a wall would also require it to be constructed on foreign territory.

A total of 33,611 migrants have arrived in Spain by sea so far this year, according to figures released this week by the International Organisation for Migration.
