White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said, however, that she couldn't guarantee that no such tape exists, but that she'd never heard such a recording.

Newman was sacked from her position as Director of Communications at the Office of Public Liaison late a year ago - a post that made her the highest-ranking black woman in the White House.

In recent days, she has released audio of her firing by White House Chief of Staff John Kelly and of a call from Trump in which he says he did not know about her dismissal. "We always recommend, if you're going to have a discussion, you should be prepared for your statements to ultimately come out later whether through recording or the employee saying this is what occurred".

Now, it's important to note that Ms Manigault-Newman is not a reliable source. Manigault Newman was on the trip, according to her book, and also accompanied DeVos to a Florida event the next day.

State of emergency declared ahead of Charlottesville anniversary
The images of people carrying torches and shouting racist slogans as they marched shocked the city, the country and the world. Chaos erupted before the event even began, with participants and counter-protesters brawling in the street.

She has been trashing Trump in the media all week, and clearly holds a grudge over her abrupt sacking from her position as a senior adviser to the President a year ago.

Sanders then did what appears to be a first for a member of an administration fond of branding information "fake news" - she admitted her mistake and issued an apology.

Ryan was on "The Karen Hunter Show" to promote her own book, when was asked asked if there's a section on Manigault Newman - whom she considered a friend before the former Trump aide turned on her.

"And so I did, I made a decision to share it to expose her, [former senior assistant to Eric Trump] Lynne Patton, [chief campaign spokesman] Jason Miller, and the Trump campaign because there was a lot of talk about this n-word tape that so many people are pursuing and that folks refuse to release. This could be hurtful to your legacy and the integrity of your work", Manigault Newman reportedly wrote to Ryan at the time. Her comments did, however, strike a nerve with the White House.

Donald Trump says protesting National Football League players should 'be cool!'
In a second tweet, Trump claimed that " Most of the money goes to the players anyway", but there is no proof that is true. The NFL released a statement reiterating that it remains in conversation with the players union over the protests.

Manigault Newman later told Trump about the incident and that's when he called DeVos ditzy.

Central to her argument that Trump is racist is her claim that she had heard an audiotape of him using the N-word.

Republican pollster Frank Lutz also pushed back on details from the book around the alleged tape. "I told him to try working it out, if possible, because she only said GREAT things about me - until she got fired!" "She's a liar, and I would say she's evil".

Katrina Pierson, one of those aides, told CNN Tuesday she had only entertained the possibility Trump uttered an epithet to placate Manigault Newman so she could move the conversation on.
