Defending champion Chris Froome's Team Sky controlled the pace and prevented attacks as headwinds blew in the ascent of the col de la Colombiere.

Kittel and Renshaw both finished just under 45 minutes behind stage victor Geraint Thomas of Team Sky but still failed to make the cut.

"This is where it gets hard, as we hit first mountain stage", said the former Sky leader on Eurosport's The Bradley Wiggins Show.

Froome is 59 seconds further back and 2014 champion Vincenzo Nibali trails the Briton by six seconds. For me it's an unknown.

Alaphilippe increased his lead over Taaramäe in the descent before the final climb of the day, Col de la Colombiere, and with 20 km to go the French rider was 20 seconds in front.
