Pompeo lauds progress in DPRK visit, but Pyongyang says talks regrettable

It is not yet clear whether Pompeo will meet with North Korea's leader Kim Jong Un before departing Pyongyang for Tokyo where he is expected to brief his Japanese and South Korean counterparts.

In a fiery escalation, North Korea on Saturday accused the US of a "gangster-like mindset" in high-level negotiations over denuclearization, a glaring contradiction of US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo's description of the talks as "productive".

State Department Spokesperson Heather Nauert told reporters Saturday that Pompeo and Kim had discussed denuclearization issues along with the repatriation of American remains from the Korean War, adding, "we expect them to live up to their commitments". He stressed there was still more work to be done in other areas, much of which would be done by working groups that the two sides had set up to deal with specific issues.

After spending his first night in the North Korean capital in three visits so far this year, Pompeo left the government guest house where he spent the night to make a secure phone call to U.S. President Donald Trump to provide an update on the talks. He said: "I'm counting on Chairman Kim to be determined to follow through on the commitment that he made".

In fact, Trump earned the scorn of seasoned Korea watchers and non-proliferation experts when he declared the crisis over.

'The road ahead will be hard and challenging and we know critics will try to minimize what we have achieved, ' he said.

Pompeo also said that there would be a meeting next week about the repatriation of remains of American soldiers killed in the Korean War.

"One thing I wouldn't give up is presence in South Korea or the ability to interact with our South Korean allies", Blunt said.

North Korea said it offered to discuss the closure of a missile engine test site, which would "physically affirm" a move to halt the production of intercontinental range ballistic missiles, and setting up working-level discussions for the return of USA war remains.

The outcome of the latest US-North Korean talks on denuclearization was clearly a matter of perspective.

CVID stands for the complete, verifiable and irreversible dismantlement of the North's nuclear program, an oft-cited demand by Washington for Pyongyang.

Pompeo replied: "Director Kim, I slept just fine".

Pompeo spoke after emerging from more than eight hours of talks over two days with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un's right-hand man, Kim Yong-choi, in a Pyongyang diplomatic compound.

"The settlement of outstanding issues surrounding North Korea, including nuclear, missile and abduction, will be extremely important to Japan, and that will also be extremely important for regional peace and stability", Abe said at the outset of the talks.

North Korea says it is disappointed with the way the USA has conducted itself in bilateral discussions, saying that the progress made at last month's historic summit in Singapore is in danger of being eroded.

"In America we consider our relationship with Vietnam to be incredibly special", Pompeo told Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh.

"Some places a great deal of progress, other places there's still more work to be done", said Pompeo, according to a pool report from usa reporters who accompanied him to Pyongyang. "So why wouldn't Kim Jong Un dig in his heels with Pompeo and press his advantage?" We sell them $100 billion, they sell is $500 billion, we can hurt them more than they will hurt us.
