"It is extremely hard for me to cease serving you in any capacity, but also, because of the transformative work that is occurring", Pruitt wrote in his resignation letter to the president.

Sen. Tom Udall of New Mexico, one of the most relentless and vocal of Pruitt's Democratic critics in Congress, said he expects more of the same with Wheeler as chief.

Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Scott Pruitt has resigned, amid an onslaught of financial and ethics scandals and widespread opposition to his campaign to roll back key environmental protections. "Andrew worked for me for 14 years, has an impeccable reputation and has the experience to be a strong leader at the EPA", he said. "But Mr. Pruitt's brazen abuse of his position for his own personal gain has been absolutely astounding, rivaled only by the silence of far too many in Congress and in the White House who allowed Mr. Pruitt's unethical, and at times, possibly illegal behavior to go unchecked", the DE senator said in a lengthy statement.

Wyoming Sen. John Barrasso, who chairs the Senate environment panel, said that during Pruitt's tenure, the EPA "has rolled back punishing regulations that were hurting American workers and stifling our economy". Environmental groups expressed dismay when he joined the federal agency, and Pruitt has since sought to roll back various environmental regulations, including Obama-era auto emission standards.

Denis Cheryshev , Aleksandr Golovin , Sergei Ignashevich and Fedor Smolov converted each of Russia's four efforts from the spot. The quarter-final, and that chance to extend an already fairy-tale foray, takes place in Sochi in six days' time.

Inhofe praised Pruitt in a statement Thursday for doing "great work" leading the agency.

"Scott Pruitt was the worst EPA administrator in the history of the agency". Wheeler acknowledged he attended but said he couldn't remember any details. Among the allegations against Pruitt are his use of first-class air travel and enlisting EPA staff for personal matters, including getting his wife a job at Chick-fil-A. President Trump announced Pruitt's resignation via Twitter. That includes a decision to install a $43,000 private phone booth in his office as well as revelations that he asked aides to help his wife find a job with a six-figure salary. His firm was paid $300,000 a year ago.

Pruitt's resignation comes amid a whirlwind of accusations and investigations into apparent misconduct at the helm of EPA.

"Scott Pruitt's departure is long overdue".

Pruitt also rankled some Republican lawmakers, including in Midwest corn states, with his efforts to overhaul a U.S. policy requiring biofuels like corn-based ethanol in gasoline.

"We urge him to immediately commit to undoing the massive damage to EPA's work done under Pruitt's leadership".
