Although similar police-involved shootings across the country have sparked violent protests, the Chicago Police Department seemed unprepared for the eruption.

CHICAGO — A man killed by Chicago police had a gun in a holster at his hip and was shot multiple times as he ran away, spun around and reached toward his waist, footage released Sunday from an officers body-worn camera shows.

Officials said three or four officers suffered minor injuries and one patrol auto was damaged, and four protestors were arrested.

Local residents had asked for more police presence in the area where the shooting took place but as news of Augustus' death spread, protesters took to the streets on Saturday night. Both versions showed four officers approaching Harith Augustus, 37.

"The whole damn system is guilty as hell", dozens chanted on Saturday just hours after police shot and killed the man in the South Shore neighbourhood of Chicago. The department said officers on foot patrol Saturday evening "approached a male subject exhibiting characteristics of an armed person".
